I am Julie Smendzuik-O'Brien, a member of the ODC Division since I joined the Academy of Management when I began my doctoral program.  After a career as an internal OD practitioner for many years at three Minnesota state government agencies, I undertook and completed a PhD program at Fielding Graduate University in 2017.  My dissertation focused on internal OD practitioners whose work contributed to the sustainability efforts of their organizations. The thing I love most about our ODC division is the rich mix of scholars and practitioners focused on making organizations and the world a better place through research and practice in organization change. I look forward to hearing from any of you who have interests similar to mine, especially in organization change for sustainability.

    Hello Julie!

My name is Lori Kendall, and I currently adjunct at Case Western Reserve University since my graduation in 2016. I've been a member of ODC since 2014, and I'm currently serving as the Communications Directors and the division's Scholar-Practitioner Rep. Hello Colleagues: I am glad to find a network of OD scholar/practitioners. Many people are unaware of this growing focus in the business world, and I am happy to be a part of it. I have had my doctorate in OD for several years now and found those who are involved in this area are well-rounded and insightful. I've always found a need to balance the arts with the sciences, and I think OD does that job with integrity and practicality.

It's an honor to be connected to this distinguished group of scholars. Thank you, Julie Smendzuik-O'Brien. Here is an overview of my background and research interest:
I am the son of an artist, so my early pursuits were in the performing and visual arts. Uncertain of this future, I decided to get another degree in socio-technological engineering. These days, this degree is popularly called industrial engineering. This degree proved to be more lucrative. I worked in public utilities in Virginia and California. I also worked in a Washington, D.C. think tank as a weapons systems analyst. Later, I worked as a test engineer in rocket engine production for Rocketdyne. I tested electronic systems at first. I ended up managing a team of aerospace scientists who tested rockets and space shuttles. After being promoted to a program management position, I became fascinated with management. I decided to obtain an MBA. This degree led to a job as the president of a new film company in Burbank, California. Unfortunately, this company was shut down after a few years. This is when I started consulting and teaching. I advised Chicago Public Schools, the Catholic Diocese of Northwest Indiana, the Chicago Urban League, the City of Hope, the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, Cash America, and numerous startups. I taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Phoenix, Los Angeles Community Colleges, Ivy Tech State College, and DeVry University. I was eventually hired full-time as a program director at Ivy Tech College in Indiana. While at Ivy Tech State College, I took PhD courses in educational leadership. I studied trends and issues for urban and metropolitan universities by joining an international forum like this discussion board. I left Ivy Tech and took a position as the Director of the Network Engineering program at a suburban campus of Westwood College of Technology. I started doing a little consulting during this time. I left this EdTech college after a few years and started teaching for DeVry University and Keller Graduate School of Management full-time. As my passion for consulting grew, I decided not to defend this dissertation in educational leadership. I knew, at this time, that I would soon want to consult… I did not want to limit my consulting to education. I moved to Chicago and started another doctorate degree at an urban institution there in the School of Business and Technology. I completed this Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree majoring in management. I also completed a master's in information system management at Keller Graduate School of Management.
My management dissertation studied the phenomenon of structural changes, process changes and decisions leading to organizational growth.
After 16 years and a full professorship, I retired from DeVry University in 2016. Now that I have joined the "sweatpants culture," I am free to consult and research full-time. My post-doctorate research is about organizational performance measurement and the cultural influences of organizational growth. My consulting practice is predominantly in the areas of health care, information technology, project management and lean six sigma manufacturing.
I welcome conversations with anyone in this group to extend my knowledge.

I loved your comment about the "sweatpant culture..."  Is that what happens in "retirement??"

Yes, Julie, the uniform of the day for a retired professor is sweat pants and tee shirts.
I am been blessed to affect the lives of many organizations throughout my career. But I am not finished. I enjoy having engaging conversations. I enjoy challenging projects. Currently, I am the President of my townhome association. In that role, I have many challenging opportunities to change the lives of the 28 owners. Since I did not have the experience of sustaining a marriage and raising children, this homeowner community is my human development project. I am looking forward to the August conference in Chicago. The theme "Improving Lives" is right up my alley.

    Hello Lori and All,

I am already gaining from this site because I've immediately found Lori who is here in Cleveland and teaches at Case Western Reserve University - fantastic!

I am a Ph.D. student at Case Western Reserve University in the department of Organizational Behavior of the Weatherhead School of Management. After 20 years of industry and consulting experience, and armed with my Master of Science in Organization Development from Pepperdine University, I desired a Ph.D. to gain the necessary experience, skills, and knowledge to be able to research and teach at university. Specifically, I'm passionate about changing the narrative of fear in organizations, individually and institutionally, and am studying at a great time when neuroscience and psychology are converging on some cutting-edge concepts that further support my ideas.

Thank you for setting this wonderful site up for ODC. I look very forward to meeting many of you in Chicago. In the meanwhile, Lori, I'd love to connect and will plan to reach out.

    Hi, Julie.

Thanks for this opportunity to get to know ODC members.  Being a new member from the Philippines, this will help my engagement with the group.

I teach action research, strategy and governance courses in our MBA and doctoral programs at De La Salle University in Manila.  I'm eager to learn from the group to help me with my action research projects on improving corporate governance policy and practice.  I'd love to collaborate with those interested in cross-country papers in this area.

I look forward to seeing everyone in Chicago.

Hello and Thank You for the Warm Welcome!
My name is Kim Groshek. I am a mom and wife, mom of a 30-year-old daughter.

I am passionate about how we can break-down silos amongst and within organizations and improve communication and social interaction. In addition, I am a Senior Project Manager for an international company and I work at  home office. I am on the Board of Directors and regional judge for Enactus, which encourages entrepreneurship, growth and innovation and am on the National Finance Committee through SWE. I take on lofty goals, I am training for my 2nd Ironman.

I am an award-winning artist specializing in conceptual art, graphic canvas and vibrant oil paintings. You can see my paintings and designs in people's homes and at children's librarys. My art has been in the Chicago at the Hairpin and MIAD Gallery's.

I have published several children's books, Bug's Adventure Series, Candace and Jimmy Find Their Rainbow and Nate the Dragon, which was made into a play which traveled with a children's theater in Wisconsin and Illinois in 2014.

I have served as an Assistant Director of DC Fashion Week in Washington D.C. and plan to design my own clothes line someday; I have created sketches and this will show up when it avails.

My mantra is "Reach, stretch and grow and learn from your mistakes, pick yourself up and try again.

The person I admire most is my husband, the person I admire that is no longer living is my grandma and the expert I admire is Albert Einstein.

This month I promised to write a hand-written letter a day to people I know, I don't and those I just met. So, don't be surprised if you see a small note in the SNAIL-MAIL.

In the last year, I've been focusing on organizational problems: inside the organization, people behaviors specific, and outside organizations and people's motivation and capacity to learn, macro and micro-management; in the end, I strive to make a positive difference.

I've dabbling in Phenomenology, and tend to lean toward the Self inquiry based philosophy; self educating with awareness. I design my theories through mind mapping, a technique my colleague Dr. Givan taught me several years ago.

I am very goal oriented, and specific to this track, I have plans to continue to make a mark in academia and research fields focusing on leading workshops and online courses, publishing and continuing to write  novels.

    Happy to meet you!

That's it for me for now. Looking forward to meeting you and collaborating.

    Dear colleagues

What a wonderful opportunity to stay connected! Many thanks to everyone involved.

My name is Simone Gutzan. Since my undergraduate studies I have been interested in organizational change and development. As an organizational psychology student I have always tried to bridge theory (my university studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich and at the London School of Economics) and practice (through internships e.g. at BMW Group in Munich and South Africa, empirical studies or extracurricular activities) – a challenging but rewarding experience.

Currently, on the one hand, I am working as a post-doc researcher at the University in St. Gallen (Switzerland) applying a process and practice oriented lens in the field of organization studies – with a specific interest in collective reflection in organizing and the healthcare sector. On the other hand, I am managing a master's program at our university that also aims at integrating "both worlds". If there is time, I work as a consultant for selected projects for the German automobile industry.

I am looking forward to better get to know your ways of "balancing both worlds" and hope to see many of you again this summer!

Sending you all sunny and snowy regards from Switzerland, Simone

    Hello Everyone,

I am Anizizo Aku (I go by Zizo) and a new member of the ODC Division having joined the Academy of Management before the end of my doctoral program that ended in August 2017. I have direct managerial experience as a Nigerian Air Force officer, and in the private sector as a business development and sales management professional driving process improvements and increasing client engagement. Currently, I am an emerging management consultant and higher education professional with a focus on enrollment program management, informing and enhancing student mobility, experiences, and enrollments. I completed the PhD in Management degree with a concentration in leadership and organizational change. With the persistence of cyberloafing activities among employees at the workplace despite electronic monitoring and technical deterrence systems in place within organizations, I found that need exists for a better understanding of how middle managers contribute to the overall organizational efforts aimed at mitigating cyberloafing. My dissertation focused on the experiences of middle managers about their role in the mitigation of employee cyberloafing in digital work environments.

I am excited to have the opportunity to be a part of this forum and look forward to a collaborative learning experience.

Hello everyone. I've been a member of AOM for a little over a year, but have not yet been active. Thank you for getting the ball rolling!

I am a current DBA student with concentration in leadership. My dissertation research focuses on incorporating emotional intelligence into the leadership selection and development of law firms. I'm from the Harrisburg, PA area and just witnessed the demise of a 135-year-old law firm, so I believe my choice of research is timely.

By day, I am VP and Employee Benefits Officer at a bank and trust. Short story: I manage qualified employer sponsored retirement plans (401k, pension, profit sharing, 457 ...). This career has given me a lot of opportunity to visit a wide variety of companies and professions and thus have seen first-hand what poor leadership, failed execution, limited follow-through and a basic misunderstanding of organizaitonal change can and does do to an organization. I am also very knowledgable in the area of ERISA and qualified plans, so feel free to use me as a resource should you find yourself or others needing questions answered.

Aside from having a full-time career and pursuing a doctorage degree, I am married with two children. One is 21, the other is a 9-year-old with autism. It is a complete joy to experience her way of thinking! I love to write, which to date has consisted of articles on the subject of qualified retirement plans (and lots and lots of academic writing!), but I hope to expand my repituar as I gain more knowledge and confidence.

It is my pleasure and honor to be in a group of like-minded individuals as I continue to learn and find my niche.

Agreed that this is a huge leap ... and many years in coming.  I've been on this ODC board for a few years now and I know the conversation about planned changes for websites and enhanced communication were going on long before that.

I am sure there will be some bumps in the road with this, but it is very exciting and we owe much of its launch for our division to our communications director and executive practitioner rep, Lori Kendall.

Will I see you in Chicago this August for the AOM meeting?

    Dear ODC community.

I am really happy to be member of the ODC and the MOC communities. In concert, the two communities inspire me to improve as a leader and research and work to contribute to academia as well as practitioners. I also enjoy to be a reviewer and help my fellows to improve their work.

My educational background is in management, cognition, and digital technology. I got a PhD in strategic cognition of social media from Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. I am responsible for the OCD course at DTU's Executive MBA, where another member of ODC lectures. Besides, I teach Big Data Business Dynamics there and train executives in strategic processes.

Basically, all I do revolves around two questions: How can we help managers to open their minds to the underutilized potentials of digital technologies? How can managers motivate themselves and their employees to explore how new technologies can create value for businesses as well as society by committing to higher goals than just profit growth?

I believe that the human mind (individual and collective) is by far the largest challenge when companies want to undergo a digital transformation. Together with two colleagues from Copenhagen Business School, we therefore developed an online tool for transformative learning in organizations. The test identifies gaps in managers' mindset, their strategy, and market expectations and shows how their mindsets influences strategic approaches to big data. By now we have tested +1000 managers and use it as a facilitator tool to support businesses in change processes. We published the book "Disrupt your mindset to transform your business with big data" and show the test at our homepageyourbigdatamindset.com Presently, we use the tool in a large research project of digitalization of the healthcare industry.

Besides, for the past two years I have facilitated at the MOC PDWs at AOM in Anaheim and Atlanta and will attend the AOM in Chicago. Hope to see you there :-)

Hi, Julie. Thanks for reaching out on this great new format and thanks to colleagues joining in. It's very good to learn of the research and practice areas of other members. Here's a little about me so we might connect.

During a career in Quality and Process Improvement, using Lean Six Sigma and project management tools and techniques, I realized that I was nearly always bumping into the people side of change, but we weren't talking about it. Is this your experience? If we did talk, it was about apparent resistance to change. But this didn't square with me since we change, even choose change, all the time. I got to thinking about what has to happen to lay the groundwork in an organization to have a people capability for what seems like continual change. What would a practitioner focus on?

To create a legitimate space to talk about people readiness, I introduced a strand called Human Sigma into our Six Sigma training. That way, we could apply some of the same rigor to analyze and impact people behaviors related to change projects. This was well-received. As a PhD student in Human and Organizational Systems at Fielding Graduate University, I also found my research topic.

My work indicates that there is an employee-built storehouse of capabilities related to organizational resilience that, if deliberately assessed and supported, can create a readiness for change, planned and unplanned, as a strategic resource. That storehouse, though, can be a quiet even hidden asset. I developed a survey process (10-minutes) with qualitative follow up to bring these workgroup level capabilities to light.

Now, I'm eager to find organizations willing to participate in this research in partnership with Fielding's Institute for Social Innovation. Since resilience is a strengths-based process, the study initiates a focus on strengths that can be intentionally leveraged now. This starts an appreciative conversation about the impact of change and the critical role of workgroup beliefs and behaviors. Do let me know if such a conversation could benefit an organization you know.

I recently had the pleasure of being a reviewer for this year's AOM submissions, which was a rich experience. Hope to see you all in Chicago!

Hello, happy to to try out this platform and introduce myself. I'm excited that the AOM is in Chicago this year - my town - so easily accessible!

I've recently transitioned from a 27-year in the corporate world to full-time higher ed. Most of my experience has been with Fortune 100s going through large-scale change - GE, Sara Lee, Takeda Pharma, Federal Reserve... in both HR and corporate communications so my background is heavy in the people processes: talent, performance, engagement, employer branding, internal coms, etc. I earned both my master's (Case Western, 1995) and PhD (Benedictine 2007) in OD, and after being an adjunct for ten years in the EdD at Benedictine U, I'm now the director of the program as we revamp it a bit from Higher Ed/Org Change, to Educational Leadership.

I joined AOM back in 2004, and have served as a reviewer for the last two conferences... I just finished my last two "emergency" reviews for the Academy - and am happy to be of service. This is a wonderful network of scholars and practitioners and I'm in awe with most of you and am humbled to call you colleagues. I look forward to seeing you in Chicago in August!

    Warmly,
    Julie

    Hello,
This is Cheryl Mitchell. My current work in ODC is large system change with a focus on healthcare. I advise senior leaders on strategies to build collaborative structures across the system, as well as design and facilitate multi-stakeholder sessions. This work has evolved from working as a consultant in the public service over the past 20 years in the areas of team and leadership development, organizational design and effectiveness, culture building and identity, organizational design and change management, as well as organizations in crisis.

I completed my PhD in 2014 (also at Fielding - Hi Julie!) later in my career as the work became more complex and I wanted to shift my understanding. I am now  professor at the University of Victoria where I teach collaboration, as well as innovation and design thinking in their MBA programs. My research is on what impedes collaboration, as well as collaborative networks. I currently have a grant from the Canadian government to explore collaboration in national research networks which include physicians, researchers, industry, hospital administrators and government.

How lovely to see an AOM community evolve around this work...

Good evening, Julie and everyone.  My name is Connie Fuller and I am delighted to be a member of this group.  I joined the Academy of Management about 20 years ago as a Ph.D. student at Benedictine University is suburban Chicago.  I received my doctorate in Organization Development in 2001.  I have actually been an OD Practitioner for about 30 years; was lucky to get in on the work early in its evolution, well before getting my Ph.D. After practicing OD in corporate positions for 20+ years, I made a change to academia, serving as a full-time professor at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology in Chicago for seven years. I retired in 2015 from everything except dissertation work, and tried to adjust to a more mellow life.  It didn't work!  Six months later I was heartsick for the classroom.  So, I am now an adjunct at Northern Illinois University and at Aurora University, and I continue to work on a few dissertations for The Chicago School.  Highlights of my rather unusual career include the establishment of 49 self-directed work teams at a Union manufacturing facility (1500 employees); development and management of a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership at The Chicago as part of the Business Psychology Department; and my current role at NIU teaching management courses to juniors and seniors who do not have business degrees, and to Tier 1 MBA students who do not have undergrad business degrees.  I periodically teach a strategy course at Aurora University that uses a simulation (Business Strategy Game) and am having a great time with this phenomenal teaching tool!  I also have 10 grandchildren, including twins born last month.  My life is truly blessed!

I look forward to the conversations this group will have as our world evolves at an increasingly rapid pace, and as our field morphs into its proper place in the chaos.

    Connie

    Hello all,

My name is David Rosenbaum and I was recently awarded my PhD from Macquarie University in Sydney Australia. My thesis was entitled "The enduring challenge of change management - new perspectives from nonprofit healthcare practice", and was a longitudinal qualitative study undertaken at the Sydney Adventist hospital, using true Grounded Theory as the methodology.

I wear a number of hats in my daily life. I am a management consultant where my key focuses are change management, action learning, strategic risk management, strategic planning, and board governance. I am also a part-time academic at the Australian Institute of Management Business School as well as the Sydney City Business School where I am involved in delivering a unit entitled Strategic Organisational Change in the former, and a unit entitled Leadership and Ethical Behaviour at the later. I am also an Adjunct Fellow at Macquarie University involved at the Centre for Workforce Futures

I continue with post-PhD research at the AIM Business School where I am researching how nonprofit disability service providers are dealing with the changes associated with the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. This study is well advanced, having delivered a paper at a recent conference in Germany. This is a qualitative study of two case-study organisations. At the Centre for Workforce Futures at Macquarie University I am about to launch research into the impact of gender (at the Executive levels of nonprofit organisations) on the management of change. t is anticipated that this will be a mixed-methods approach.

I am proud to be involved with such a prestigious organisation as the Academy of Management and look forward to continuing interactions with such a knowledgeable group of academics and practitioners from whom I can continue to benefit intellectually.

    Hello ODC members,

I see that there is a group of seemingly interesting people studying
    about organizational change.
As I will come to Chicago for AoM this year, I am looking very much
forward to interact with at least some of you.

Allow me to shortly introduce myself. Ralf Bebenroth, born and raised in
Germany and three weeks after receivng my PhD from my hometown
university of Kassel in 2001 (since then) living in Japan.
I am a tenured full professor at Kobe university and do not need any
promotion. However, I am lately interested in how employees feel at
target firms (after a change has happened) and what can be done to make
    them a better live.
All the best to you and best greetings here from the spring at Kobe,
    Japan.
    Yours, Ralf
