PDW: Harnessing the Intersection of Experiential Learning and Social Capital Development to Improve Student Engagement, Retention, and Learning in Management Courses.
Would you like your students to be more engaged in class? Would you like your students to learn more material? Then, harness the intersection of experiential learning and social capital development to improve your management courses.
By structuring opportunities to "learn by doing," we not only connect theory to practice, but we blur the boundaries between learning and working and between learners and workers. Rich connections are established and developed in this space between education and practice, and those connections have value stemming from access to information, norms of reciprocity, and greater trust across the individuals and groups involved.
This PDW will highlight the value of getting smarter and more intentional about the connections we create and develop through experiential learning. Although "learning by doing" can be a solo exercise, most experiential learning brings people together to work on projects or shared objectives, such as developing a business plan for an organization, running a manufacturing operation in a simulation, or preparing a student for the world of work. This PDW will explore how learners connect with each other and with other people, who might be clients, mentors, coaches, or co-workers. In sum, this PDW will reveal the connective power of experiential learning and why it is so important to management development and business education.
We are looking for additional presenters for this PDW. Email us if you have a great example of using experiential learning in management courses and you want to share it with the members of the Academy.
Thank you,
