Today, as the ever-evolving landscape of work and technology reshapes the organizational paradigm, the future of internal consultancy shines with unparalleled promise. This confluence of human expertise and emerging trends opens new frontiers, offering internal consultants an unprecedented opportunity to embrace dynamic roles enriched by cutting-edge technologies and innovative methodologies.
Internal consultants: The driving force behind organizational innovation and success is a new addition to the Research in Management Consulting book series. This volume will delve into the timeless wisdom of internal consultancy and its seamless integration with future trends, setting the stage for a harmonious collaboration between human insight and the transformative power of AI and other emerging forces. This visionary exploration sets a course toward a future where internal consultants emerge as the driving force behind innovation, organizational excellence, and collective progress. We plan to address several pressing questions posed by scholars and practitioners and plan to organize the volume into four sections:
Section I: Foundations of Internal Consultancy
In this section, we invite chapters that address the fundamental principles, historical context, and essential skills that underpin effective internal consultancy. Authors are encouraged to provide theoretical frameworks and practical insights that form the bedrock of internal consulting practices. Questions papers might address include:
- How has the role of internal consultants evolved over time, and what historical milestones have shaped its development?
- What key theoretical frameworks inform successful internal consulting engagements, and how do they adapt to contemporary organizational challenges?
- What essential skills and competencies are critical for internal consultants to thrive in their roles, and how can these attributes be cultivated through training and professional development?
- How do ethical considerations influence internal consulting practices, and how can practitioners navigate complex ethical dilemmas while preserving organizational integrity?
Section II: Future-proofing Organizations: The Role of the Internal Consultant
In this section, we invite chapters that address the dynamic landscape of internal consultancy, exploring the impact of emerging trends such as AI, digitalization, remote work, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Authors are encouraged to examine how internal consultants adapt to new realities, play a role in future-proofing organizations, and leverage technological advancements for organizational success. Questions papers might explore include:
- How are internal consultants embracing AI and digital technologies to enhance decision-making, optimize processes, and drive organizational innovation?
- How do internal consultants navigate the challenges and opportunities of remote work and virtual collaboration, and how does this influence their engagement with organizational stakeholders?
- What are the potential risks and benefits of incorporating advanced technologies into internal consulting practices, and how can practitioners balance human intuition and AI-driven insights?

In this section, we invite submissions that examine the transformative journey of specific roles within organizations that have transitioned into consultancy-driven positions. Authors are encouraged to explore how roles such as Human Resource Business Professionals (HRBP), DEI professionals, and Chief Innovation Officers evolve to meet the demands of the future of work. Questions chapters might address include:

- How do Chief Innovation Officers fulfill the role of internal consultants, guiding organizations toward embracing creativity and fostering a culture of innovation?
- What other emerging roles within organizations embrace the internal consulting ethos, and how do they leverage their unique perspectives to drive transformative change within their domains?
Section IV: Cultivating Excellence in Internal Consulting
In this section, we invite submissions that focus on advancing internal consulting practices through the lens of organizational excellence. Authors are encouraged to explore innovative methodologies, collaboration strategies, and success metrics that elevate the impact of internal consultants. Some questions that chapters might address include:
- What innovative methodologies and frameworks can internal consultants utilize to enhance their consulting engagements and drive transformative change within organizations?
- How do successful internal consultants foster collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including leadership teams, employees, and external partners, to achieve organizational excellence?
- What metrics and measures can internal consultants adopt to assess the effectiveness of their interventions and demonstrate the value they bring to their organizations?
- How do internal consultants continuously learn, adapt, and innovate their practices, staying at the forefront of the evolving field and enhancing their contributions to organizational success?
We welcome thoughtful, clarifying, provocative, or creative proposals for chapters. If you're interested, please start with a brief proposal (approximately 250 words), including what you have in mind, any key questions you're addressing, and the ideas, concepts, cases, data, or experience base you will use.
