Annual Meeting Chicago 2024

Greetings from the Organization Development and Change (ODC) Division!

We invite you to take part in the ODC division’s vibrant program for the 2024 Annual Meeting. We offer a variety of sessions. These include sixteen paper sessions, twenty symposia, seven PDWs, and a doctoral consortium spread across all the conference days. Sessions explore the grand challenges of innovation and technology, paradoxical tensions in the workplace, organizational transformation, AI, and fresh advances in ODC theory, research, and practice. Sessions, workshops, and events intersect with ODC’s commitment to rigor, relevance, and relationships.

Join us in sharing new knowledge, insights, and questions in our quest to foster healthy organizations and communities.

R2: Rigor and Relevance to Addressing Today’s Grand Challenges (session 876)

Join a panel of scholars – including Jean Bartunek (Boston College), Jody Hoffer Gittell (Brandeis), Natalia Levina (NYU), and Judith Louise Walls (University of St. Gallen) – in an interactive discussion on how the pursuit of rigorous and relevant scholarship and practice can help address today’s grand challenges.

 

Rigor-Relevance Award: In Conversation with Jane Dutton and Kathleen Eisenhardt (session 983)

Sunday, August 11 – 4:00pm – 5:30pm

We unite two prominent scholars - Jane Dutton and Kathleen Eisenhardt – who have pushed our understanding of organizational development and change through their scholarly contributions. They will begin the session exchanging the meaning of rigor and relevance and what is the balance between them in pursuing sustained impact. Participants will engage in a session that is expected to be both practical and highly impactful.

 

Followed immediately by the ODC Rigor-Relevance Reception (session 1056) from 5.30PM - 6.30PM, Marriott, Salon 1.

ODC Distinguished Scholar 2024 - Denise Rousseau (session 1727)

Denise Rousseau is the H.J. Heinz III Chair in Organization Behavior and Public Policy, Heinz College and jointly Tepper School of Business. Denise’s scholarship on evidence-based management and organizational change, examines the interface between academics and practitioners, where her impactful research has bought to light rigor and relevance in abundance.

Action Research Lab: Foundations Innovating for the Future (session 383)

Saturday, August 10 – 1:00 – 3:00pm

Marriott: Salon C

Engage with this vibrant and promising initiative of the ODC Division!

This PDW aims to explore action research principles, design choices, and knowledge creation. It is led by David Coghlan (U. of Dublin). Directed at doctoral students, faculty, and practitioners, it encourages collaborative inquiry and egalitarian approaches to addressing organizational challenges. Participants will gain insights into conducting impactful research through action research methods.

 

Publishing Inductive Qualitative Research in Prominent Academic Journals (session 682)

Sunday, August 11 – 10:00am – 12:00pm

This aims to help practitioner scholars publish inductive qualitative research in prominent academic journals. It features experienced scholars – Quy Huy (INSEAD), Melissa Graebner (U. of Illinois), Winnie Jiang (INSEAD) - who guide participants on topics like journal expectations, literature reviews, data collection, co-author collaboration, manuscript refinement, and navigating the review process. The focus remains on managerial relevance while encouraging scholarly rigor.
