The pace of innovation in the 21st century causes organizational strategies and outcomes to evolve continuously. While creativity and innovation are important, stimulating them remains problematic, and design thinking has been linked with the ability to foster transformative innovation. Human-Centered Design processes are being used successfully in the federal government to enable transformative innovation as well as to effectively manage various change initiatives. Principles and methods of Human-Centered Design allow multiple sectors within an organization to collaborate in new ways. They also provide a systematic toolkit for tackling complex problems and achieving beneficial outcomes for work teams, operating units, and organizations. PDW participants will be introduced to the core principles of Human-Centered Design and have opportunities to engage in collaborative teamwork. They will apply the principles shared during the PDW to develop creative and innovative solutions for problem scenarios relevant to the informal economy. This PDW will highlight Human-Centered Design principles from the new LEAD-Innovation course that is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and LUMA Institute in an effort to create innovative and cross-sector thinkers in government, non-government organizations, the private sector, and academia that could address challenging organizational and HR problems. Use of the World Cafe format will invite workshop attendees to participate in collaborative conversations to effectively address important challenges and identify opportunities.

Dr. Sydney Smith-Heimbrock, a senior leader at OPM, will be available after the PDW to provide additional insight into organizational leadership and human resource topics within her purview.
