Dear Org. Change and Development Researchers, (message sent with permission of the AOM IG Chair)

We wanted to reach out to all those concerned with the protection of human dignity and the promotion of sustainable human flourishing through their research, and teaching, please support our application for Interest Group status at AOM.

The humanistic management network has been encouraged to apply for Interest Group Status at the Academy of Management. For that purpose we have already collected signatures at the Academy of Management (>280), but were now told that the original bar (180) has been increased to 500. If you could help us to reach that bar, by signing the below petition it would be great (please make sure you enter your Name!).

The AOM board gave  us until October 15, 2013, so not much time....

Please feel free to share and sign!

Thank you and all the best,

    Michael

    Hey Michael,

thanks for this. Can I ask a couple of questions on this:

    1) When I saw your manifesto at the AoM I noticed you had an upfront a priori commitment to market society - is that right ? I'm not sure where I stand on this myself, because it depends what it means - but a lot of AoM members are in countries where this has a sense which might not be yours, if I got you right, but maybe I am wrong.

    2) Can you point us in the direction of some peer reviewed literature around humanistic management per se ?

cheers, and good luck with your mission.

    Bill

    Dear Bill,

Thanks for getting back. I guess re 1) we wish to acknowledge the positive effects of markets in some contexts, and also use the quoted statement to preempt accusations of etatist, centralist, communist, or socialist nature. We are rooted culturally in the democratic governance perspective, which can be accused of western centralism, but also wish to point out the global ethos of humanism in all cultures, and strongly subscribe to the Senian approach to freedom as capability development..In that context markets can be helpful ( so we think). Not sure if this clarifies anything, but this is my first attempt;)

Re 2: here are some pieces freely accessible :

There is also a standing book series at Palgrave McMillan on Humanism in Business
and a book at Cambridge University Press with contributions by Amartya Sen, Muhammad Yunus, Bill Drayton,Lynn Paine etc.. (http://www.cambridge.org/us/academic/subjects/management/business-ethics/humanism-business)

    and some further selected papers:

you can find more under each of the authors listed above..

    Hope that helps..

    Thanks for the interest,

    Michael
