Over the years, organizational and institutional change literatures have developed their own conceptual vocabularies, with limited interaction. These mature research traditions have great potential for fruitful interaction. The aim of our PDW is to explore how organizational and institutional change literatures could theoretically inform and enrich each other, generating potential for integrative theoretical frameworks to help address current and emerging questions about change.
The PDW is both integrative and developmental in flavor as it seeks to push scholars situated in either one or both, institutional change and organizational change, domains to think of ways to foster connections between the two areas to build a more complete theoretical toolkit. This would not only help address current challenging questions about 'change' but also open further avenues for interesting research at the cusp of the two domains. The workshop is of interest to faculty and PhD students. We have an invited panel of four scholars to initiate the discussion and facilitate roundtable interaction among participants.
The PDW consists of the following three elements:
1. Introduction and Panelists' opening thoughts (50 minutes)
2. Roundtable discussions (60 minutes)
3. Pulling together themes and future directions (40 minutes)
Here are some suggested themes for research papers and round tables (but are not limited to):
1. Resolving and coping with tensions across levels of analysis
2. Institutional hybridity and organizational change
3. Institutional work and organizational change; organizational identity work and institutional change
4. Understanding institutional and organizational changes in the context of inter-organizational adaptation and co-evolution
This PDW offers a great opportunity to create dialogue between institutional change and organizational change scholars and also to those who are already working at the intersection to share their theoretical and empirical challenges.
Session meets Saturday 12:15-14:45 at UBC Robson Square Room C150.
UBC Robson Square is located at 800 Robson Street (between Hornby and Howe Streets).
